NEWS FLASH! Critter Creek's Hero completes his advanced Search and Rescue training!

Mark with 8-week old Hero

Pedigree

Dear Meredith:

Hi!  I'm Critter Creek's Hero's "mom" and I just wanted to email his dropshots site to you.  I wasn't sure if my husband Mark sent it along to you or not.  The site includes photos of Hero and I either training or testing.

He really is a great little dog.  I love his size and temperament.  He is extremely trainable and, as Mark may have told you, the only reason he hadn't passed the evals as a pup was because we had to take a break from training for a while.  Although I'm sure he enjoyed his short stint as an active house-pet (while we were moving and having a baby), his happiness is in working.

At his most recent test (the FEMA Advanced eval), Hero found 6 of 6 victims (with no false alerts) and he completely ignored all distractions.  These distractions included bbq ribs, a dead coyote and recently worn clothing.  Several of the evaluators commented on his excellent agility skills (which is something I didn't have to teach him - I believe its a genetic tendency).

Equally as important is that this was Hero's first trip on an airplane.  Our dogs ride in-cabin with us, and I was a little concerned that he would be nervous on the plane.  However, he had no problem with the ride and really seemed to enjoy all the attention he received from our fellow passengers.  Hero loves all people, including children, and was fun to travel with.  He knows when to be energetic and when to turn it off.  This is an important and often overlooked trait for a USAR dog.

I hope you enjoy the photos of him.  He really is a special dog and I thought you'd appreciate knowing that he is an excellent representative of your philosophy.

Thank you,
Konnie and Mark

Hero's First Deployment, November 22, 2006

Meredith:
I didn't think this would happen so soon after our certification, but Hero and I went on our first deployment with the USAR team yesterday!!!  An ink plant exploded in Danvers, MA yesterday morning at 2:45 a.m., destroying the plant and many nearby buildings.  As you can see from the photos, homes in the adjacent neighborhood were severely damaged.  We were called in to conduct a secondary search of the buildings and perform structural assessments.  By some miracle, nobody was killed by the explosion.

Hero and I searched a number of homes and fortunately there was nobody to be found.  The first-responding fire department had successfully evacuated everyone.  Hero did a great job.  He was not at all disturbed by the loud noises associated with a rescue operation (sirens, heavy machinery, etc.) and did a great job of ignoring the distractions while he worked.  Several of the houses looked like somebody had picked them up, shook them and then set them back down.  Consequently, the contents of the kitchens (including food!) were spread throughout the entire home.

And of course, he was insanely friendly with everybody who wanted to greet him.  I really think the dogs provide a little stress relief to the other responders.  Lots of fireman and other rescuers came up to Hero to give him a pat.  Hero, of course, loved every minute of it.

There are at least 3 or 4 of me and Hero.

Wow!
